You probably saw in the latest Front Sight magazine a review of DS Permans 1911 grips that are sized and shaped like 2011 grips with an integrated magwell. Very cool stuff. They allow you to have the same grip profile on your single stack that you are used to on your Limited blaster. I know several people who dont like the skinny grip on their 1911's. Anyway, its an interesting review, check it out.

I've been discussing a related project with Scott Perman for a while. I was interested to know if he could build a set of grips that maintained the 1911 grip profile, but had the integrated magwell. I wanted lightweight grip panels, and I wanted them blank to stipple my own extra rough pattern. Having them extend down below the grip to form a magwell would also save weight over a conventional magwell.
He just surprised me with a set of prototypes to test. I had planned to put these on my competition gun (STI Trojan .40) but it has a one-piece S&A MSH/Magwell. I havent gotten around to finding my spare MSH...So in he meantime, to get the ball rolling I installed these on a beat up old Colt ( a 1950's era Lightweight Commander in 'Super 38' ;-) I love this gun, but it doesnt hit worth a damn...I use it as a range toy and dryfire tool.

The grips are very light. They are also totally smooth. They will require stippling. If you prefer grip tape, these are perfect for that too.
They fit without any fiddling, there was plenty of clearance for safeties, etc. There are no cuts for MSH pins etc. The rear of the magwell meets at a seam. It wasnt perfect and it doesnt need to be. This is not a show gun, and these are not show grips.
I plan to stipple these so rough it makes a porcupine cringe. I will probably also grind the front of the magwell 'corners' down just a little, they're kinda pointy on these prototypes. I might, after some range time, decide to grind the magwell extension just a little too.
I use Tripp Cobra mags, the basepads just extend a hair past the magwell.
Preliminary dryfire suggests that these will hold up to abuse about the same as any other plastic grip.
I wont be shooting much single stack this year (not until after Production Nationals anyway) but I'm anxious to get these stippled up and installed on my comp gun. They'd be nice on a carry gun too with a mild texture.
Scott Perman has been pleasure to deal with, he's really into the shooting sports. His enthusiasm shows. You may know him as 'sperman' over on the enos forum. This project is still in the prototype and testing phase, but I hope and believe it will be on the market soon.
He makes a few other cool things too. Bomar style rear sights for CZ's, an extra stiff spring for CZ thumb safeties to avoid inadvertent engagement (you know who you are) and the aforementioned 1911/2011 grips.

He is also working on a version of the 19-20 grip that uses a Dawson Magwell instead of the integrated extension.

That's a freakin' funnel on the bottom! If you can't make a reload with that you got bigger problems than a magwell.
