I do not own any what I would consider collector guns. I really don't know where to begin. My grandfather was a wwII vet in austria and wifes grandfather in anzieo. I would like to know a little more about what would have been carried then.

What nation's military did he serve with?

What branch?

If your grandfather was in the German Wehrmacht in Austria then he probably had a bolt-action Kar98k and no handgun, unless he was a driver, NCO or officer.

If your grandfather was in the American Army (Airborne) then he could've had any number of battlefield pick-up handguns or privately purchased handguns (both American and foreign). As for long guns, likely an M-1 Garand or M-1 Carbine.

But these all would be guesses without knowing 1) Nation, 2) Unit, 3) Military Occupation.

A medic in the SS is going to have a different loadout from an English paratrooper.

American army. from what i remember he did basic in columbia sc and went to austria on ski patrol. He was there for occupation.
