What is you guys setup when you test a guns longer range accuracy? (25 yards ish). A bench and some sort of gun rest? What color and type of target? what kind of groups do you guys get with a m&p factory barrel (or similar pistol) at 25 yards

3" off a rest would be a decent expectation of a GLOCK or M&P.

Nice 1911/2011s will shoot ragged holes.

all i do is hold it up there and shoot! i have never used bench rests for handguns, except once when i was sighting in at 100, 150 and 200 yards. for 25 yards, i just two-hand it and go.

rolled up and taped towel works for me. Your really just testing Your group shooting accuracy with that pistol. Only way to determine the accuracy the pistol is capable of is to remove the human element.

I use a normal USPSA/IDPA target and put one of those 3" Shoot-N-See stickers in the A zone. Its been so long since I shot groups I forget what the best groups I've gotten out of my G34 are, need to start doing that again.

Problem with those is you've got to have all the different fittings for different types of guns, thats where the cost really bites.
right, but once you do, you'd be set. It's a 1 time thing. Just figure 1911, Glock, J-frame....those would cover most of the people that'd want to rent it. You could get the other grip adapters as needed, so it wouldn't be as bad a bite.

I test the accuracy of my load and/or pistol at 10-15 yards. I do everything just A's I would in a match. I shoot two hands freestyle. In my world the limiting factor in the accuracy equation is my vision and my patience. I don't have much of either. If I can punch a 2-3" hole at 15 with a load it's good to go!

For sighting in I agree with you man, the Ransom rest idea is just to check the mechanical accuracy of the gun.

100% agree!
Any rest, any prop, etc will result in a different hit on the target.
Your gun, your arm, your trigger pull is what will determine your point of aim.

I had to prove this to myself by using one of the Lead Sleds for the .06.
Point of aim differed by 2" at 100 yds, vs shooting with a front rest, and my shoulder.

I'll will say that at 25 yds, its probably not going to make that much difference.

Actually it does. You'd be surprised at the difference between a two hand hold unsupported, two hand hold supported, and a Ransom Rest. I only have two pistols that I care what their accuracy is, both being a K22 and K38. As long as I do my part they will just about drive tacks at 25yds. As to my CCW or other guns I may want to carry, 4" or less at 25yds is just fine.
