Ok...I know there are a LOT of opinions on barrel break-in...so I'd like to hear a few. I'll be breaking in a saturn 18" for 3gun this week...

do yall clean your 556 barrels? I have a nordic with 1k rounds on it and it just hit me that ive never cleaned it.... it seems that a lot of people only clean the chamber on pistol barrels, myself included but what about the rifle barrels?

I use a bore snake on all.....Rifle & pistol & Shotgun

I clean the pistol every 3-400 rounds.
Rifle every 600 or so.
This sounds backwards? By clean, you mean add oil? I break down rifle and clean BCG couple times a year, and thoroughly clean the barrel with solvent once each year. Granted I only shoot about 1,000 rds per year total in my rifle.

I drop the barrel in my pistol to chamber check ammo when i reload 500+ rounds. Then I just wipe it down and put it back in. Every 1,000 rounds I completely strip it and clean the whole thing.

Shotgun same as rifle, except solvent in barrel. I don't bother with solvent in shotgun unless there's visible fouling.

I shoot 5k-7k rounds per year combined and malfunctions are very rare. Should I be cleaning more than this?

Saturn barrels are fine and should hold 3/4-1 MOA. Just shoot the thing and clean when necessary. We are trying to shoot 1/4 MOA groups in 3 gun. Be a gun shooter and not a gun cleaner with a bunch of safe queens.

Don't feed your rifle elephant dung ammo and expect it to elephant dung diamonds either.

This is the most comprehensive barrel break-in information, all in one location. Be careful, this kind of information could be dangerous.

^^^^^^^LOL!

I kinda bought into the barrel break-in about 12 years or so ago.

I was dead set on getting an upper in .243 WSSM. Found a guy in Denver building them. I couldn't find any barrels to build my own, so don't know where he found them, but he said they wouldn't shoot at all until they had 200 rounds down the pipe, with a bore snake after every 3rd round, and a through cleaning with hopee's every 12 rounds.

My first set at the range was a 5 shot group at about 2". Did the deal, and went to the next 5. It settled into a 1" or so group which is about all I can get with some coveralls across the hood of a pickup.

300-400 rounds later, it does no better. Killed a lot of coyotes and deer though. :D

Thanks fellas...I dont have safe queens and damn sure don't love to clean my guns. I just wanted to make sure I didn't "wish" I had done something different after the fact.
