I am looking for a new shooter Trainer for my father. After my lil' bro's run in with an attempted murder suspect mid January at the hog farm on the state line road, dad finally asked for a defensive weapon. I bought him a G19 Gen4, added the night sights and new need someone to walk him through using it. I have showed him the very basics but I am not an instructor and don't know how to communicate what I know into positive instruction.

He lives near Ark City and works shift at the Conoco in Ponca. I know if he is ready for a 2 day TDSA style class, but he needs the intro level stuff and then we can advance on. One of his old class mates is a CCW instructor and good 3 gunner but has recently lost his wife so I don't know if he is up for anything at the moment.

Thanks in advance

Adam

Adam, I think tdsa's ap1 would be a great class for him. We often have new shooters, as well as those who have had no other formal or semi-formal instruction. They actually get more out of the class because they have no ingrained bad habits.

Good Point Mike. But like the pistol, I am just going to have to set up the class for him. I will try and get his schedule and theirs and see whats shaking.

We had a few in the class I went to as well. The instruction & assistance provided to the new shooters in the class I attended was great. Lance & Marshall did a fantastic job of making sure they were comfortable & confident with what they were doing. The progress they made over the course of the weekend was awesome, you'd have never guessed they were that new by the time the class was over. The people in the class with more experience received plenty of attention as well, no one was neglected or left to their own to figure stuff out. It was very attentive hands on instruction.

What's your Dad's level of knowledge with handguns, specifically with semi-autos?
Very low. When I took him out to shoot Saturday, he had read the first 2 pages of the instructions before falling asleep on the couch. We did some basic stuff, loading mags, slide release, mag release, basic grip and fired about 120 rounds. Might have been the first time shooting a centerfire handgun in 20 years or more.

I would agree that TDSA would take very good care of him. With his limited knowledge of basic mechanical function and nomenclature of handguns, I'd say get him into an NRA Basic Pistol Course first. I think it'll build a good basic foundation that he can take off from with Marshall and those guys.

Follow the link below and select the course (about 1/3 of the way down on the left side), then tell them where you want to take it. There's a guy teaching the course in Wichita several times this year, but I have no idea on the quality of his instruction.

Good luck!
