I've been buying powder in larger quantities for many years. Discovered the economy of bulk buying, as well the the security of having a lot of powder from the same Lot..so no concerns with lot-to-lot variability. I'll buy a 1# container of a powder, to give it a try & see how well it works. I look for the consistently in which it throws from my Dillon and Hornady powder dispensers, and how accurately the rds. shoot from my loads using it. If it is determined to meet those criteria satisfactorily, I'll buy the largest container of that powder that I can find..then, it lasts for some time.
All this brings me to yesterday's find, which I'm posting about today. I transfer powder from it's large ( 5# or 8# container) to a smaller 1# container, for use. I do this, so when I'm actually loading with a powder, I have the 1# container on my bench. If time passes ( & I didn't remove powder from the hopper) I don't have to guess what powder is in the hopper. My 1# container of HP-38 was empty, after loading about 500 rds of 9mm, so went to refill the 1 # container. That's when I noticed the price of the 8# container I bought.
I should always date the powder containers after I buy them, ( sometimes I do this, in this case I didn't ) so don't know how long ago I made the purchase.
