I just now heard about this one from last sunday in, of all places, commiefornia

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/granny- ... r-handgun/

I am am little disturbed by this story. Well, not by the story itself, but by what police had to day about it
Police say the suspects could be the same men who tried to rob another jewelry store at the Asian Garden Mall in Westminster one day later.

In that heist, the store owner shot a suspect in the face.

Garden Grove police say it may be the same crew, but they caution store owners about defending themselves with guns.

So the police actively discourage property owners in fear of their life from defending themselves and others. i have to wonder how long ill callifornia makes it a crime to defend yourself at all.

Well you know, it's entirely possible that those defending themselves don't know how to properly handle a gun, and we can't have that [/sarcasm]

Part of me thinks that response is some sort of automated, one size fits all nonsense forced upon the cops by anti-gun terrorists. Surely, no cop on the street is so brain power challenged that they would suggest that a person fearing for their life shouldn't defend it. ???

The Gemnological Institute of America (GIA) trains their people not to provoke a robber with a weapon because it escalates the situation, and that you are five times more likely to be killed or wounded if you resist (this is straight from their Diamond Essentials course). Although, I'd love to see the report from which they get that statistic.

I just don't get it, though. I personally think that the bearing of arms is a greater theft and robbery deterrent than video cameras and signs telling customers that they are being watched. We openly carry in the stores where I work, and we've never been robbed. (It's hilarious hearing what people exclaim when we turn around and they see our guns on our hips!)

I was in a local tool store a while back and right on the door there is a sign stating something to the effect that employees carry concealed weapons in the store. Basically if you are thinking about robbing them, you might want to reconsider.

If the owner/operators of stores like this as well as others who are common targets for criminals carried and posted a sign similar to the one above, it might deter some thieves. Looking at the video of the coffee shop robbery attempt in Florida kind of proves that these thugs don't expect or want to be shot at. I would however recommend that anyone carrying for self defense in such an environment go and take a good tactical or defensive pistol class. It would be beneficial in the long run. Just owning a gun and not practicing how and when to use it only has so much value.

Actually i have had that suggested to me by a Columbus GA police officer. He was off duty and working mall security at the time, so I?m not sure if that was his official stance, his personal stance, or the line he was required to recite by the mall. And my father was told by Summerville PD he had no right to shoot a person attempting to force entry into his home, but that was about 15 years ago. Don't forgot the post Hurricane Katrina gun seizures where police and federal authorities actively denied people the right to self defense. Those were messed up from the word go in so many different ways that I can?t hold the police solely responsible, and yes, I realize martial law was in effect. And I realize that this was New Orleans, where the law can be somewhat fluid (parish law vs. canon law if I recall correctly). I am not saying all police do this, but it does occur. And it is only statements like this that make it into the main stream media reports. You won?t see headline, or even snippets that say ?cops say get a gun? (well not on a regular basis, the sheriff in Spartanburg being an exception) or ?police have uneventful day?. BUT officers like this do exist, and DA?s that support them also exist. When they show up on scene, gun owners are going to have a bad day.

Yeah, I guess you're right. It's sad that it is not crystal clear to all that one has the natural right of self defense.
