40 and 9 mm Powder question

There are several good powders out there that work well in both, my favorite is N320 I use it 40 major and 9mm minor. Other good ones would be Tightgroup, WST, Universal, Solo 1000, I'm sure there are others but those are the most popular

N320 or titegroup if your shooting cmj's or hp's. fmj or moly I'd use wst to cut down on the smoke.

WST is really a good powder, and you can use it for 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP. It performs well in all three. I'm actually going to try some with small rifle primers to see if I get a tighter velocity window pretty soon.

A tighter velocity window is popular in prisons I'm told.
The problem with N320 and WST, for 9mm is for all but fairly light loads you are at the top of pressure. N350 is a much better powder for use in 9mm, 40, and 45, as it doesn't over pressure in any of them while still giving great velocity. Down side is it costs more than WST. I have always loaded 9mm and 40 with small rifle primers, and haven't seen any difference in standard deviation compared to small pistol primers the few times I used them, and I burn LOTS of WST.

so you have used small rifle primers in pistol? I only ask, and this is not a plug at all, cuz I put our small rifle primers on sale, and as I load only nine mill I kinda got myself miffed at putting something on sale that I can't even use.

If you are shooting h&h tonight I will be there shooting 40 with small rifle primers. I cannot tell any difference.

I have only used them for a very short time....since 1999. I usually use Winchester Small Rifle for all small primer needs but once Powder valley shipped me 10,000 Federal Samll pistol primers, so I used those all up and went back to Winchester Small rifle primers. I have shot well over 100,000 9mm and 40 loaded this way, but like I said it has only been for a fairly short time.

good to know that it safe to do that. last time we went to go buy some small pistol primers they were out of them but had plenty of the small rifle
That is great information. I was going to pick up some small pistol and rifle primmer tomorrow. I will just buy the small Rifle and save myself a little money...

I've used both for several years as well. When the primer shortage of the 90's came about, the SPP's became a commodity that drew big money. The SRP's were available pretty cheap. I thought the SRP's were more powerfull, so backed off, and then worked back up using a Chrony, etc.
I never saw much difference. I've also used the SPP's in .223 rounds without much noticeable difference using Varget.
