Ive shot a 30-06 before and not a .308. How much softer is a .308 to the shoulder than a 30-06. I dont like putting more than a few rounds down range with a 30-06.

Not much of a difference between the standard .308 and .30/06. I know that Chuck Hawkes and about a 1000 interweb gurus have charts and tables with recoil energy....

How a rifle fits, and how you shoulder it play a huge part in recoil management... do it wrong or with a severely ill fitting rifle and a .30-30 or .32 special can become uncomfortable in short order. Rifle action (bolt vs Semi auto) is a variable also. I "feel" a 1903 Springfeild a lot more than a gas operated M1 Garand- and thats using identical M2 Milspec ammo in each

Shooting any mid- bore caliber just for the heck of it is gonna hurt a little if you over do it anyway.

My .308 R700 kicks less than a .223. Of course it has a 1" pachmayr pad, muzzle break and weighs 14lbs! :) I can also spot my own shots.

Recoil is a matter of physics. Given the same weight bullet, and gun the .308 will kick less. Its a couple of hundred FPS slower.
Now, for the rest of it. Different fixed stocks can give a "perceived" reduction in recoil. A straight stock will give a sharper recoil, vs a pistol grip stock.
As I understand it, the recoil pads, don't necessarily reduce the recoil, but make it happen over a longer period of time that makes it feel like less recoil.

Personally when shooting my .06, .270, etc I use a PAST Magnum recoil pad. IMO it spreads the recoil over a larger area of the shoulder, and makes it easier to shoot by a long way.

Went on an elk hunt over the new years holiday in NM, and tested 40+ loads a day for a couple of days, and never got a sore shoulder when using the PAST magum recoil pad.

Very true, comparing both of those guns. My M1 Garand is a pussycat, my 1903A3 I have to have a slipon Limbsaver. No I'm no wimp, but with four out of seven Cervical vertebrea fused in my neck, I'm VERY recoil sensitive!!!!!!!!!!
