One shot today at the range today where the brass did something funny; it came straight into my face. Below is a picture of it. Not sure what happened or why. I think the gun chambered another round after this but I am not certain. I have have v. short term, [what is the word?]... memory. The brass got smashed somehow. Did the gun not eject all the way due to a weak load? Any ideas?

Thanks friends.

Well the shell ejecting was pushed up instead of out to the side and the smashed case mouth will line up nicely with the front of the ejection port near the top of the radius on the right hand side of the slide. The slide continued back and basically threw the case straight back into your face. Had an officers model that did this with boring regularity due to high slide speed. Re-shaping the ejector and shortening it a bit helps, as does propper extractor tension, or it could be a tired worn many times ejected case...I know I have some from the 90s I still reload and I have no idea how many cycles they have on them. If it does it a lot. FIRST change the recoil spring, they do wear out, next get hold of a good 1911 smith and have the ejector tuned, and the extractor checked, but if it,s a once in a life time, I would chalk it up to oh well, but I still would change the recoil spring. Recoil springs are the most common piece to wear out and the most overlooked part to replace.

looks like as Kurt said, the slide was moving fast & tried to close before the spent case was clear & pushed it back forward pinching it between the breech face & barrel hood ultimately kicking it straight back at you.

This happens on the extraction/ejection part of the cycle, not on closing, while the slide is still moving back. If it happened on closing it would crush the case and there it would sit.
