Yup, the gas block is aligned. Forgot to mention that one.
Some additional research on the internets indicates that my gas port might be undersize. 0.093"-0.096" is the size range for a 20" barrel with a 13.2" gas system. Crane drills the gas ports on the Mk12 (18" barrel, 13.2" gas system)...
I have an AR upper built around one of the 18" Satern barrels from Doc's Gun Shop. I cannot, no matter what I try, get this rifle to lock back consistently on an empty magazine.

I shoot quite a bit of offhand rifle. For one thing, that's one of the only ways that I can shoot rifle at the indoor range - the ROs get a little weird when I start using the furniture for improvised barricade positions. For another thing, I firmly believe that good offhand rifle translates...
I train at the indoor range a lot - I live like ten minutes from one of the nicest indoor ranges in the country.
You need to have a realistic understanding of what the indoor range can offer you. You're not going to be able to set up target arrays, shoot on the move, or practice setups. But...
