Comps...what do you use?

I use a benny hill rolling thunder. Other popular comps are the sjc titan and jp cooley comp. If you're all ATAS there's the Battlecomp.

I'm going to try the Nordic components corvette next.

Which is better? No one can say. All the big names work well. Pick one you like and roll with it.

I use the DNTC (aka FSC556) from Primary Weapons Systems with QD threads for my suppressor.

The tests have been done numerous times over and the two most effective comps are the SJC and the rolling thunder. Not opinion here, they actually did some harmonic dot thing that showed the muzzle movement. The difference I have found is the SJC is louder to the shooter than the rolling thunder. Other that that, they are equally effective. The bottom of the list includes the smith and the benny cooley comp (JP)

AAC for me, but that's so I can also mount my can. If you want a "tactical" comp, the Battlecomp is tops for now. If you want a 3-gun comp, the one's Chambers listed are the way to go.

+1 Mike is Smart!

If you gotta have a black comp the best is the SJC/Lund, period. If you want stainless steel then the Rolling Thunder is the $hit! This one is better thant he SJC but it don't come in black. You can drill a hole in the side of the expansion hamber and open it up bit by bit until the rifle doesn't move.

I am going to toss my JP/Bennie Cooley and get another Rolling Thunder. I guess I have to deal with the eaird step down on my barrel for .936 to .750 on the comp.

Well let me catch it when you toss it. I know a couple of guys (M class) that run them on their rimfire pistols for steel challenge and they swear they work great for that.

Good stuff, guys. I love that ATAS acronym. I'm new to this theater ;) but I just want to limit my muzzle rise. If I change my mind about a silver comp there's always Duracoat. Everything I am doing to my rifle is to make it easier to drive, message ends. :s_laugh:

I've fired a rifle with a JP on it and it shot flatter than anything I've ever tried. I was really surprised. With that said it was the first comp'd gun I had shot. I have fired suppressed rifles but the comp wins. The Rolling Thunder and JP are fairly evenly priced. The Miculek looks like a bargain unless someone who has owned one has evidence to the contrary. Thanks, again, for all your input. This is one of the last couple of things I want to do to my rifle.

Don't get me wrong they work. They just aren't as effective as a rolling thunder or SJC. Those rimfire pistols would be double in weight if they ran the longer heavier more effective comps plus they may not help any more on a rimfire pistol because there isn't a lot of gas to hit that 2nd and 3rd baffle.

The miculek is very popular too. It's just not the most effective. It can be tuned like the rolling thunder too. If your in a budget get the miculek. If want the best and don't mind the extra weight and noise get the big ones.

There are price, noise, weight trade offs just like everything else. I want the flattest shooting rifle possible. I spend twice the cost of a comp about every match in ammo so price is not an issue. I wear double hearing protection so sound isnt an issue. I am not a kitty cat. I mean I workout so weight isnt an issue (although I do like a light gun).

It's up to you to decide what attributes are important to you. You should come to the match next Sunday. I think there will be rifles with all 3 types of comps mentioned above available for you to shoot.

Anyone ever shot a tank brake? Are they much more effective than a rolling thunder or SJC? I've seen open shooters with both.

I have one on my 5.45x39 M&P15R. It tames that carbine length gas system significantly. We need to take some wrenches to the range one day soon and try all these on the same rifle. It's tough to compare my JP rifle and JP brake to the tank on a carbine gased rifle.

OK.. I knew this was going to come up. That rifle you shot with the JP on it being the flattest you ever shot my have other factors involved. Since the .223 is a very low recoiling round anyway, saving an oz or two of reciprocating mass may have more effect than the comp you use. Shooting lighter rounds may also increase the felt recoil. I know it sounds backwards, but ask the open pistol shooters what happens if they shoot light/low pressure loads. I have shot them all at one time or another and although you can get a rifle that feels flat with that JP (non tank brake) on it, if you were to screw on the rolling thunder, it would flatten it out more, guaranteed! I happen to know a fellow that is sponsored by John and he does not run the JP cooley comp for a reason. The whole US team that went to the Nordic Rifle championship last year including Daniel Horner, Kurt Miller, Jeff Cramblit, Kelly Neal, Jerry Miculek, etc were all using the rolling thunder. (Yes, even Jerry was not using "his" comp)

But, if you are planning on using irons and competing this year, please use the other ones. They will work much better for you! :D

I looks like it's been awhile since anyone posted in this thread. I recently got a new 3 gun setup and decided to take the Rolling Thunder off of the rifle it was on to put it on the new setup. I was looking the thing over while it was off the rifle and noticed what looks like a ton of errosion on the first and second "baffles" for lack of a better term. I haven't had this break for very long but have run a few rounds through it. The RT was living on a 10.5" SBR and is now on a 16" super lite setup. The Rolling Thunder works really well on the SBR, I'm excited to see how it works on the go fast rifle! Check it...
