When I was in Ohio in the late 70s we grew so much fruit & vegetables Organically with much good luck.
The winters were cold & killed off many overwintering insects that unlike warmer winter areas that had less severe
winters. A little 5-10-10 will do if you can afford it later on, Organic fertilizer last over a year & salt based fertilizers
only last 30 to 60 days shorter if you gat a lot of rain.

Start your plants early under LED grow lights & plant out in Mid May, then keep planting until September
all your Cole & cold loving plants will take you into November if you cover them with row cover fabric.

Chickens are a good source of protein Eggs & meat easy to feed & take care of..

Gardened back in 80's, went to organic and really incredible how much food there was in a 20x30 plot, cut regular garden by a third, could do again if had to, kids mess with small stuff now

We have today Red & green leaf lettuce 1 head lettuce called softball, Bright lights Swiss chard, French breakfast radishes, Tat Soi, Bok Choi, Red, golden & bulls eye beets, Red Russian Kale, in our 10'x10' 6 row fall garden. We have been picking leaves for 3 weeks & they are growing fast & large with the cooler weather.

All the hungry bugs are dying down now & we use safe organic Sluggo slug killer, it works 100% & is safe for kids & pets.
I have a mulch row cover in the middle to gain access & have 6 rows of plants all started with a strip 4" wide & 2" deep with potting soil for your seeds
the trick is your seeds come up in a weed free soil at first. The plants will come up & you will know what they are right away, & later you can pull the other weeds
that will come up after your plants. are growing well.

Finding fresh Salad mixes in the grocery store is not easy however you can grow your own longer than you would think. We have frost covers we will use over the 10x10 plot & enjoy salads up to Dec & beyond. For old farts like me Salads are a staple requirement LOL.

Don't forget Blueberries, strawberries, Asparagus, Grapes Dwarf Fruit trees if you have space.
I planted an Asian Pear semi dwarf & the 3rd year it had 105 Pears they are round green Russeted & white crisp sweet flesh.

I have been growing Heirloom fruits & vegetables for a long time now I can save the true seeds make cuttings from old fashioned fruits that you can not buy in the stores. Oh & don't forget those ever important Hot peppers LOL the spice of life & pain relief for the brave .

2 examples today Sams had Dehydrated Hash Browns for under 7 bucks & NIDO Whole powdered Milk 1 gal can for 9 bucks a can.

We grew Tomato's & peppers in buckets. They had a carnival over at the shopping mall where we found elephant dung to feed our plants.
Anywhere even in 3" pipes through holes into circulating water with fish emulsion without dirt in your basement with grow lights.

Grow everything you can & barter with other growers for things you can't grow yourself.
