My fishing/hunting buddy has finally decided to get into pistol competitions. He is looking for his first competition style pistol.
He has a co-worker with an FFL that can pick up one of the new XD(M) 5.25 Competition Series for him.
He wondered how it compared with my pistol, the M&P Pro 5" in .40.
I'll have to admit, I haven't followed the XD line of pistols at all, so I told him I'd put it on the board, and let the experts have a go at it.

He will like the M&P a lot more, I have a lot of officers that are customers and they love there M&P after switching from Glock and Springfield.

I have never shot an M&P, but I love my XDM 5.25 .40.
It feels right in my hand.
If we can meet at a match or range, he can shoot mine to see if he likes it.

With only a few exceptions, listening to cops about shooting is like taking advice from a ham sandwich.

The XDM 5.25 competition is a sweet thing. If I had to choose an out of the box pistol for production division it would be the one. Trigger and sights are good to go out of the box, grip is plenty grippy, etc. Only thing I really don't like about them is the grip safety. It's as if Springfield bought the services of one of the best pistol shooters ever and listened to him.

That said, he'd be well served by any of those.

MP is my choice. XDM's bore axis is really high. Sights flip like crazy. Triggers better in a stock XDM. Sights on XDM are not perfect. Front is too wide, rear isn't wide enough.

The xdm is a good gun but its overpriced and way too top heavy which means more felt recoil due to excessive muzzle flip so follow up shots (double taps) are harder to accomplish.

The m&p pro is the better package I believe. It has a lower bore axis, lower price, and a better stock trigger.

I went with the m&p pro after shooting both. Both triggers are a elephant dung ton better than a glock, but I would take a glock over the xdm.

I'd stay away from the XD/XDM's because its easier to get parts for M&P/Glock. Among other things. But they do work

I have sold and shot both in the 9mm model. I liked both but I felt like the M&P was easier to shoot and hit with. But I suck so you can take that with a grain of salt. I have been thinking about getting one of the M&P Pro's for myself. If it was my money, I would buy the M&P first. It is made here in the USA. Also, the Smith has an ambi slide stop.

Last I checked, there were some available. but they come in small quantites.

Also, the M&P 9 Pro is sold to one of my customers had the fiber optic break after a couple easy range sessions. He was using it mostly for Bianchi style matches and wasn't abusing the pistol. I don't know if any one else is experiancing this, but he changed out sights the f.o.break.

IMO I would say the MP over the XD. I have handled and shot both of them. To me the MP had a solid feel and a good weight in the hand. The XD felt loose and almost seemed to have a slide to frame rattle. Furthermore, stated above the MP is Made in America.

folks who like xd's like em. but I have noted a lot have gone to SW for many of the reasons noted above.

My son was a XD guy for a long time... and traded into a Glock 27 when his job changed to plain clothes. He says he wondered why he did not do it sooner... and he did not go M&P simply because it's not on his "approved list" as of yet.

DOH! True. Sad but true.....

This 5.25" XD(M) competition is the bi-tone and I can get it new for around $550 in the .40 cal that dennis is talking about, is this a good buy? Or hold out for a M&P or other pistol?
