Palmetto State Armory is always a good first stop, although I was on today and their prices have jumped a bit. Used to be they were hard to beat on assembled uppers and rifle kits but you may be able to do better than the prices I saw today.

This should go in the Semi-Pro section, since the info is 100% from chambers. When I was looking at building one, this is what he sent me about the upper he assisted Rusty with.

That upper has the following:

- Nordic Wilson 16" barrel (these are awesome tack drivers and the best value for the $$...stainless, wylde chamber, middy gas, lightweight)
- PRI adjustable gas block, but any low pro adjustable gas block will do (you open up the gas until the bolt will hold open on a mag, then your low mass operating system is all set)
- JP low mass bolt carrier
- Clark carbon fiber free float tube...the DPMS is a little cheaper and of similar or better quality
- A good comp...Rolling Thunder. These are tunable. Right handed twist barrels tick to the right a bit, you can drill a small hole in the right side of the expansion chamber to keep the muzzle perfectly on target, which you may not even notice since you're a lefty. Same thing with the hole on the top. The SJC is another good comp.

The upper receiver/charging handle can be whatever the hell you can find cheapest. DPMS makes a simple upper (no trap door/forward assist) for like $80 and there's not a damn thing wrong with a milspec charging handle.

IMO, those are the best parts for the money.

AR upper trap door? Man that's ATAS!

For me, the benefits of having a forward assist and a trap door out weigh the benefits of not having one. Benefits of closing the trap door to keep debris out on these windy Oklahoma summer days, or rain, or potato chips. Forward assist for piece of mind or if you neglect to clean it for awhile and have trouble seating that first round. Price is about the only thing you save. Weight is negligible and I doubt you'll really realize the ounce saved. More weight can be save elsewhere.

Kirk, putting together an upper really isn't hard at all. I think it's easier than the lower because you're not dealing with springs and detents that go flying into the upper stratosphere. When I build something, I go for quality. And I look for where I can find the most parts from the same store to cut down on shipping. As always, look at bravocompanyusa.com, rainierarns.com, gandrtactical.com, LOKI, and google. There's nothing wrong with the milspec charging handle, but there are better options out there. My personal favorite is the BCM gunfighter. Upgraded latch, upgraded latch pivot point, beefier construction, better construction to cut down on gas blowback. That last one might not be an issue for nonsuppressed however.

Message me if you want help putting one together.

Loki my friend. Give Erik a call and tell him you're from Boomer shooter.
I have the tools to assemble if you wanna hang out in my garage and drink a couple beers.

Building is no issue that's simple after a couple of beers hehe, I was just looking to find an upper rec. so when I upgrade I'll have a home for all the goodies I take off my rifle now. I've got a couple lowers just begging for attention.

I might give one of those Loki a try but I'm a cheap ass so who knows what I'll end up with. Later,

Kirk

Well I got a DPMS complete flat top upper w/ 16 SS bull barrel, FFT, sling swivels etc.. Comes with bolt and carrier....etc. If you are interested let me know.

We might have to talk when you get back ;-) I know if that offer to borrow that 5.56 reamer is still out there if all goes well I should be needing that here in the next few weeks. Later,

Kirk

Well I found some Aero stripped uppers for $65ea so I got 3 hehe 2 for my lonely lowers I have and one for my great friend who helps me with my rifle builds, figure if he can put up with me that's the least I could do. Later,

Kirk

Sorry to be such a dumba$$, but when you speak of the "trap door", are you talking about the dust cover, or is this some new sort of upper? I'm seriously contemplating building my first complete upper, and inquiring minds want to know. Thanks!

T.R., you're not the one being a dumbass, they're talking about the dust cover. :)
