I wrote mine. I'm certainly no writer, but feel free to use this letter or make adjustments to it as you see fit and send it to our politicians. We need to be heard.

Dear Senator Halligan,

I am writing you to express my fierce opposition to implementing any new gun control laws, and to support increasing physical security in our Nation's schools. Presently, certain groups are attempting to exploit a national tragedy to infringe on the rights of Americans by implementing legislation that does not address the problem while it diminishes people's ability to defend themselves.

The 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees the right of individual Americans to bear arms as upheld by the Supreme Court in DC v. Heller. In 1976, the Washington, D.C. City Council passed a law generally prohibiting residents from possessing handguns and requiring that all firearms in private homes be (1) kept unloaded and (2) rendered temporally inoperable via disassembly or installation of a trigger lock. The law became operative on Sept. 24, 1976. On June 26, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, struck down this law as unconstitutional. During the years in which the D.C. handgun ban and trigger lock law was in effect, the Washington, D.C. murder rate averaged 73% higher than it was at the outset of the law, while the U.S. murder rate averaged 11% lower. Since the handgun ban was lifted, murder rates in D.C. are at a 45 year low.

Most of the gun control suggestions come from the now expired 1994 Assault Weapons Ban. Many have done research and found that the 1994 Assault Weapons ban was not effective at reducing crime and in some instances increased it. Banning largely cosmetic features on a firearm does nothing to solve this Nation’s problems. Limiting the capacity of magazines is also not the answer. Criminals would ignore that law and I want as many rounds in my defense weapon as they have in their weapon if I am defending my life against them.

In More Guns Less Crime, John Lott presents a tremendous amount of data to prove arming potential victims lowers violent crime. Lott also found that "..when different states passed right-to-carry laws...the number of multiple-victim public shootings declined by a whopping 67 percent. Deaths from all these shootings plummeted by 75 percent..." Using firearms for defense decreases crime, and additional gun restrictions will hinder access to firearms for defense.

I hope that you work to protect our citizens’ 2nd Amendment rights while we try to find a solution to reduce mass shootings and lower crime. I am very interested to know your thoughts, and any actions you are inclined to take on this matter. Thank you for your time.

Kindest Regards,

Dustin Cantrell

I heard back from my fed folks. Oddly enough it seems some read the email because they responded to some of my exact points. I could be naive but it sounded like more than an auto reply.

They've always responded to mine with an autoresponse followed by an actual reply. The actual has always taken longer than the times you guys are getting them in, maybe this is a good thing?

I'm sending emails and snail mails this week. I don't know how true it is, but I've heard that these days an actual paper letter gets a lot more attention. Supposedly the emails are just too easy and come flooding in from all sorts of folks not in their districts, etc. I'm doing both...

I've written both state and federal in both Oklahoma, but also in neighboring states where I do business and have an interest. I try to write letters that debunk the current media spin. It's consuming my time, but I hope it helps.

First off I would like to extend my deepest sympathy for the victims of the recent shooting that have occurred; however, it was not the guns fault that those peoples lives were ended so abruptly. It seems to me that all of the attention is being put on the firearms that were used in these shootings and not the mentally ill individuals that committed these heinous crimes. If the ban on semi-automatic weapons succeeds then we should also look at banning cars, alcohol, all tobacco products, knives, along with any other "tool" that has ever been used to kill multiple people. Cigarettes alone kill more people than any firearm has ever illegally killed anyone. I don't see how banning semi-automatic firearms will accomplish anything except forcing a lot of independent, AMERICAN business owners to close their doors and have to find some other way to support their families. It will also hurt the men and women that fight for the very freedom in which we have been provided, because many of the men and women that return from war, return to the states to open family run businesses that deal with firearms, and also start or work for private security companies that need semi-automatic firearms to provide the security that is needed. There are thousands of law abiding citizens that own these types of firearms and compete on a professional and national level as not only a way of life, but a means of providing for their families. President Obama is all about spending billions of dollars "stimulating the economy" but yet wants to ban semi-automatic firearms or "assault weapons" or "high capacity magazines" and in turn that will close many AMERICAN businesses. That in turn will take the firearms out of the hand of law abiding citizens, competitors and private security companies that need these "tools" to continue their way of life. That will not stop someone who is mentally unstable or ill to obtain an firearm. They will still be able to obtain these firearms from the black market, but now that law abiding AMERICAN citizen that had his gun taken away from him or was not able to purchase one cannot defend him/her self when that mentally ill individual wants to commit that heinous crime. And that’s not even to mention the millions of Americans that use these firearms to hunt and provide food for their families. I understand that the President has been forced into a position where the President feels as if something needs to be done, but banning these firearms is not the answer. The answer is with the individuals that are committing these acts of violence. I am asking you to support and fight for our 2nd Amendment Rights that our forefathers put into place to keep our government from infringing on the peoples very way of life and financial support. I thank you for your time and truly hope that this e-mail will help in our fight to keep our firearms without prejudice.

This was my e-mail that was sent to my congressman and to the president

Emails don't cut it. Most get deleted without being read. Get on the PHONE. Letters are also better than emails but I think they are slowing down the screening and those letters might not get through in time.

As far as letters or emails being better, here is a quote from Congressman Frank Lucas web site:

I would like to encourage every constituent of the Third Congressional District of Oklahoma to contact my office to share your views. The fastest way to contact me is by email or fax. However, if you choose to write, please note that due to heightened security some mail takes up to three months to reach my office.

No matter if you send letters, or emails, the legislator will likely never see them. A staff person will read them and compile a list of those who are for and who are against the proposal. Yes, emails will get deleted after they are reviewed, but letters are disposed of as well.
All letters to all congressmen and congresswomen, are screened before opening by security.

Here's mine. It's some original and some plagiarization.

Dear Senator xxx,

I am writing you to express my fierce opposition to implementing any new gun control laws, and to support increasing physical security and placing trained, certified and armed personnel in our Nation's schools. Presently, certain groups are attempting to exploit the Sandy Hook shooting, a national tragedy, to infringe on the rights of Americans by implementing legislation that does not address the problem but does diminish the people's ability to defend themselves.

Our country is awash in gun laws, some 20,000 of them, which are ignored in every instance of “gun violence” by the perpetrator. Laws don't prevent tragedy at the hands of deranged individuals. Timothy McVeigh showed that very plainly when he bombed the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City.

In the overwhelming majority of past mass shootings, people were around the perpetrator who could have made a difference had they only been armed themselves. Why were they not armed? The foremost reason is because they were not allowed by law to be armed! I would support any effort to change or abolish "gun free zones".

In his book “More Guns Less Crime”, author John Lott presents a tremendous amount of data to prove arming potential victims lowers violent crime. Lott also found that "when different states passed right-to-carry laws...the number of multiple-victim public shootings declined by a whopping 67 percent. Deaths from all these shootings plummeted by 75 percent..." Using firearms for defense decreases crime, and additional gun restrictions will hinder access to firearms for defense to those of us who obey the law.

I urge you to reject ANY additional gun control legislation. I ask that you work to defeat any legislation, executive order or federal regulation that in any way: bans any firearm or magazine, places any restriction on magazine capacity, makes any attempt to reclassify any firearm to bring it under NFA rules, moves to register firearms, owners or creates ANY limits of our right to self-defense.

I thank you for your service and what you have done for the people of your district, but gun control is now a “litmus test” issue for me. While I would prefer not to, I find it necessary to be a single issue voter in upcoming elections.

Thankyou for your time.
