Safety Rules

 1. All team members, instructors, and guests will adhere to the following safety rules during all Practical Shooting Team (PST) functions and activities. Failure to adhere to safety rules will result in disqualification from the day’s events. Repeated infractions may result in permanent disqualification from all PST events.

 1. In addition to specific safety rules enforced by the PST, the following three basic NRA safety rules will be followed at all times by all participants:

Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction
Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot
Always keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to shoot

 1. PST Range officers or instructors will designate a table as a safe area for the handling of unloaded firearms for the purposes of holstering, bagging, inspection, and maintenance. Handling ammunition, loaded magazines, or a loaded firearm at the designated safe area is prohibited.

 1. At all Oklahoma State University PST events, all firearms will be kept unloaded in a holster or case unless one of the following conditions is met:

 2. You are at one of the designated safe areas where handling your unloaded firearm is allowed

 1. Hearing protection and eye protection are required for all participants during all PST events.

 1. Keep the muzzle of your firearm pointed downrange at all times.

 1. Keep your finger outside the trigger guard any time you are not actively engaging targets. Putting your finger inside the trigger guard of your firearm or onto the trigger while moving, loading, reloading, or holstering will result in disqualification from the day’s events.

 1. Maintain control of your firearm at all times. Dropping a loaded firearm or causing a negligent discharge will result in immediate disqualification from the day’s events.

 1. Know the technical workings of your firearm and how to use it safely before participating in PST events. If you are unsure, ask a PST instructor or range officer for help.

 1. Use only the correct ammunition for your firearm.

 1. Safety rules will be enforced by all event participants including team members, instructors, and observers. Safety infractions should be reported to a range officer or instructor immediately.

 1. Team members and instructors will follow all additional rules put in place by the host range when attending out of town events.

 1. No alcohol will be allowed at PST events, and no person will be allowed to participate in events while under the influence of drugs or alcohol including prescriptions that might affect judgement or motor skills.
