Opening up the loading port

I'm making a few improvements on the M1 for next season and wanted others opinions if there is any advantage to only opening up one side of the port? I use (LH) weak hand reload and wondered if leaving the right side of the reciever intact would work like a "back stop" for the incoming rounds.

I open the side opposite the ejection port more than the side with the ejection port. My biggest reason for opening it up is to get rid of that sharp edge. It eats up my thumb badly. Rounded corners makes those 100 loads a day of practice much more enjoyable,
